Supporting Veterans in the Criminal Justice System Part 2: Responding to Co-occurring PTSD and SUD

August 22, 2023 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) are often co-occurring within the Veteran population. Up to 75% of Veterans with a SUD also have PTSD and 20-30% of Veterans with PTSD have a comorbid SUD. To reduce the risk of recidivism and to support long-term recovery in justice-involved Veterans, it is crucial that treatment courts know how to identify and respond to their unique needs. In Part 2 of this webinar series, speakers from the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs’ (VA) will discuss the relationship between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorder (SUD) amongst Veterans, and the VA’s approach to addressing these disorders. Attendees will be provided information and strategies that treatment courts can use to identify co-occurring disorders amongst justice-involved Veterans, and targeted approaches to support these needs.
